Past Commander Nick Cliteur shares adventures aboard HMCS Calgary

Thursday, March 10th 2022 at 7:00 p.m. (sign-in begins at 6:30)

Please join us for this exciting virtual presentation. Peterborough Squadron’s own Nick Cliteur will entertain and educate us about life aboard the Canadian naval frigate, HMCS Calgary.

In December, 2019, Nick was invited by his son-in-law, Lt(N) Barber, to join the traditional “Tiger Cruise” with the crew of HMCS Calgary.   A Tiger Cruise is an opportunity for family of deployed members to spend time aboard a sea-going vessel to learn about the ship’s day- to -day operations. Nick boarded the HMCS Calgary in San Diego, California and headed out for three nights as they returned to their homeport in Esquimalt, BC.

HMCS Calgary is a 440 foot long x 54 foot wide Frigate.  Two hundred and twenty-five officers and crew of the Royal Canadian Navy crew the ship. During his three days on board, Nick had the opportunity to meet various members as they went about their daily routines preparing for all kinds of challenges.

Nick writes: “It was an exciting and informative three days. I came to the conclusion that if they practice this hard during “peace time”, I know that they will live up to their motto “Ready! Aye! Ready!”

Nick Cliteur retired as a Sergeant with the OPP in 2010 after 32 years of policing in both municipal and provincial postings. Nick is still active with the Commissioner’s Ceremonial Unit that participates in special events throughout the province.  In 2011, Nick took his first boating course with the Peterborough Power and Sail Squadron. He have been actively involved with the Squadron ever since and is currently the Past-Commander.  Nick and his wife of 34 years retired and moved to Selwyn Township area in 2010.  Nick enjoys boating in Peterborough and the Kawarthas.
